From Nixon’s administration and onward, thousands of Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) were formed and almost all failed. Among the few that survived are Scott and White in Texas and Mayo clinic, Minnesota — Managers were trained in health care management.
Reason for so many failures: Doctors were not trained in management so they made horrible business decisions and seasoned insurance managers took advantage of this lack of knowledge by assigning high maintenance patients to these HMOs. Doctors must have business knowledge to manage even their private office!
