Saliva Anatomy

Three major glands form the salivary glands.

• Parotid glands – produce a serous, watery secretion.

Some facts about saliva:

1. The enzyme named amylase in saliva breaks down some starch into sugar.

4. Human saliva contains 98% of water and balance 2% of electrolytes, mucus, antibacterial compounds and various enzymes.
5. A Human body can produce 10,000 gallons of saliva in an average lifetime
6. Over excitement and anger leads to increase in saliva secretion.
7. Stress and depression reduces saliva levels.
8. Chewing gum increases saliva output by 1000 times.
